Matthew 6:18 (KJV): That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

Reflection on God’s Word for Today – 29 Mar 2026

The culture of the Jewish faith about fasting in the time of Christ had been bastardised by the pharisaic rules of its observance such that people were fasting more for show than for its spiritual purpose. That culture still persists today among many religious groups. Jesus Christ, in his characteristic manner, rebuked the practice and pointed people to the right way that has benefits. It is sad to see many church denominations still engaging in this false fasting tradition when Christ has clearly discredited it. You should familiarise yourself with what true biblical fasting requires, and strive to adhere to that, even if it means going it alone. Rest assured that Jehovah will be pleased with you.
